Green Green Episode 13: Erolutions (ova) Uncen

2009: 10

1.-JAPAN

Taking advantage of a trip to the land Nipponese, not only took the opportunity to make tourism, but also to get a little up in the currents of twentieth-century Japanese literature. So I am slightly disappointed reading his popular Soseki Botchan, but then I got even with Kokoro, I conquered by simplicity, purity of line and the oriental sensibility of an author fascinated by the West but too sensible to adapt to European views. Kawabata seemed more consistent with masterpieces such as Beauty and sad or Snow Country, wondrous and disturbing tales as The House of the Sleeping Beauties, or novels such as Kyoto, which reflect the spirit and identity of the best. Mishima was murkier me with a moral and lyrical violence to very special occasions that can evoke the poetics of Kitano, but sometimes stumbles and does not know where to stand. And excessive harshness Ryu Murakami I choked and almost transparent blue, which also I finished reading the bullet train that took me from Tokyo to Kyoto. But do not forget the most popular Japanese writers alive, and finally read The Wild Sheep Chase, my account pending in Castilian with Haruki Murakami, who convinced me as one of the most comprehensive books and, despite the undeniable flaws the author, fascinated me and made eagerly devour every page of Vol. There is something strange and very close to the protagonists of the novels of Murakami.

2.-THE SHADOW OF THE GIRLS IN BLOOM / THE WORLD GUERMANTES

it also was the year of return to other accounts, and continue reading In Search of Lost Time, with its joyful taste of phrases and feelings. No rush to end the seven volumes, so I thought that two volumes a year is a good ration. Maybe The Guermantes I came to choke a little (too many rooms, too aristocracy), but Marcel Balbec teen made me enjoy like no other book that I remember.

3.-YOUR FACE TOMORROW

and refusing to leave the cadence Proust, was also absolutely joyful continuous reading of Your Face Tomorrow, the great novel by Javier Marias, who is able to mix more evocative influences Marcel Proust with the springs more intricate and playful novel genre: Ian Fleming Nabokov (Nabokov if he can be considered a genre). It's nice to get lost in the digressions of Marias, sometimes as much fun and sometimes as moral, but sometimes disagrees with the merits. However, you can not deny his desire fighter and dump the authenticity of every word. I have to say that, at the end of the third volume, I was left wanting more, I felt a kind of monkey Marys.

4.-THE HISTORY OF LOVE

A discovery by Nicole Krauss, is New York which I also met on the occasion of a trip to New York, trying to find authors who are left out of the most typical and known geometry of the Big Apple. Try Jews in Brooklyn, but is so far from Paul Auster as Woody Allen. Meaclando special sensitivity and sweetness with some risk structural and narrative prose Krauss seeps slowly moving to open a hole inside of readers away also possible sentimentality.

5.-THE HEART IS A LONELY HUNTER
authors
sensitive And if we can not forget to talk about Carson McCullers, who I finally read this year its masterpiece, The Hunter is a Lonely Hunter, with its magnificent view of a town in Middle America and its moving portrait of a group of characters. It's hard to think of an author whose characters have more soul and more body than in this novel, small in appearance but very large in progress.

6.-THE ROAD

We in the USA, but completely changing style. With a year behind read The road, Cormac McCarthy's apocalyptic tale, and I appreciate some change over the years in the author's style. The road is dry and even more forceful than usual in him, and his prose is not as intoxicating as Sutree, for example, but their descriptions, with fewer elements, remain relentless, and its touches of irreproachable character. His most minimalist and perhaps the most telling. I do not know if that's good or bad, but the novel struck me.

7.-WASHINGTON SQUARE

A classic transition from Henry James, from which will go towards a more elliptical and certainly elegant. This still holds its ground staff many nineteenth-century narrative conventions, but it gets a little romance flawless, almost perfect, which can not help thinking as you stroll along the arc or the source of Washington Square. (And the movie W. Wyler, The Heiress, I think a great adaptation).

8.-DEMONS

The last of the great soap operas of Dostoevsky I needed to read. I thought being a political proclamation eventually became one of its most characteristic novels, full of crazy characters, situations full of fever, fever and spear, and messy and full of ideas about God kaleidoscopic, Russia, society, morality ... The psychology of Dostoyevsky, but play with archetypes, reaches as far that all possibilities allow (something like Borges said of nineteenth-century Russian novel in general).

9.-indignation

To give some new, some of those titles that have appeared on lists of newspapers, and if someone needs to follow the pulse of current (I increasingly less, the truth, although I can not meet certain weaknesses). The penultimate and the great Philip Roth novel seems to distance himself from his last record, old age and the maze of death and, oddly enough, back to the land of youth who did not play incendiary since the days of American Pastoral. The novelette is short but exemplary, but at times may seem to be written on automatic pilot ...

10.-MAUS

New this year is the foray into the world of comics, with the famous Pulitzer Prize in 1992 by Art Spiegelman. Although many things can not be compared with other literary works, Spiegelman's book is exemplary in many ways: from his personal honesty and moral, the brilliance of its execution and the risk (for a comic book) of its structure, to its clear and faithful portrait of the Holocaust and, especially, the touching and genuine relationship shown between a father and son. There are also great creations in the world of comics.

Tatuering över Keratosis Pilaris

literary memories SURVEY. What filmmaker has marked the decade 2000-2009?

As happens every year and, more specifically, every ten years, build collections, balances and substitutes, and creating an urgent need to organize and classify what we think has made this time. So not to be outdone, I wondered what filmmakers have marked, for one reason or other (more artistic than commercial, that's why Peter Jackson is not on my list, but in the end it affects) the audiovisual creation of the last decade . Launched a proposal with a few names, but any suggestions would be welcome. Incidentally, I tried to be a bit objective, as far as possible, so I personally would not include any names from the list ... And, of course, be great if he voted "Other" in a comment to tell us who is going through your head:)

One final note. It is unfortunate that a lot of films from what is here is still invisible in our screens, and it seems that things have improved slightly in recent times. But much remains to be done.

From Europe

Jean Luc Godard. I know there are 60, but the 00, but this man has marked every decade and at which point, for example, though perhaps less prolific, has given us apart from some short piece, two of the most beautiful films, deep, lyrical, personal, and more load of ideas across the globe. Just for Praise of Love (2001) and Our music (2004) deserves to be here. Be around 80, but Godard is doing the cinema of the future, more vital, young, and innovative than any other.

Jacques Rivette. Another veteran of the Nouvelle Vague that is in great shape. He has given us four films this decade, and always excellent, whether in its lighter side, with Who Knows (2001) or 36 vues du Pic Saint-Loup (2009) in the period drama, with The Duchess of Langeais (2007) , or in which for me is his latest masterpiece, Story of Marie and Julien (2003) , which plays with the fantasy genre, police and romantic (the generic pastiche is given as well) to give us one of the most beautiful love poem from Hitchcock's Vertigo.

Eric Rohmer. To end the New Wave veterans, we could not forget in this blog to Eric Rohmer, who seems to have neglected during this decade and tangles teen comedies to realize its cycle of "Tragedies of history, with three works flawless, which retain their universe and do not forget to innovate and break new ground in the world of cinema, whether using digital painting The Lady and the Duke (2001 ), revision the spy genre in Triple Agent (2004) or referentiality, and the game literal views of the history of The Romance of Astrea and Celadon (2009) .

Philippe Garrel. Another veteran, although not as much as before, that, surely, this decade has reached its absolute maturity film, giving us one masterpiece after another. It seems it all before, and perhaps for that and for the gives the age maturity has been able to shoot a total work as Les Amants réguliers (2005) , plus two beautiful chamber pieces, the controversial and risky Sauvage innocence (2001) and the perfect, flawless, sublime the border of the dawn (2008) . Is it the most active filmmaker in shape?

Claire Denis. The French director of international operations over the decade, after completing the above with great force, and has achieved a personal style influences from precise and highly selective, as the French Bresson, Rivette and Jean Rouch, or Wim Wenders and Jim Jarmusch, with which worked personally. Has been able to develop radical themes, as in Trouble Every Day (2001) , realize radical styles, as in The Intruder (2004) , show that you can make good social and accessible film, as in 35 Rhums ( 2008) , or rise above a very characteristic poetic sensibility Vendredi soir (2002) , my favorite. Because everyone has their favorite movie-Denis, and this decade has been extremely prolific: in addition to those he has filmed several short films, documentaries Towards Mathilde (2005) , or the recent White Material (2009) .

Olivier Assayas. Former Cahiers critic continues to demonstrate his versatility in his dual role of author who collects classic French tradition of Marcel Proust in his films, countryside, as sentimental Destinations (2000) or Summer Hours (2008) and as a champion of avant-garde and postmodernism in their thrillers halfway between cyberpunk and the tribute movie buff: Demonlover (2002) , Clean (2004) , Boarding Gate (2007) .

Arnaud Desplechin. But in terms of French literary tradition, the author who best reflected this heritage, always looking forward, visual findings or the possibilities of cinema as a global art, that have been Arnaud Desplechin. With works accessible and dense at the same time, the great chronicler of family and emotional diseases of modern man. The XXI century Tolstoy has given us this wonderful decade after another: Esther Kahn (2000), Leo, or the Company of Men (2003), Kings and Queen (2004), L'Aimee (2007) and A Christmas Carol (2008) , his first English commercial theatrical release. At last.

Manoel de Oliveira. already in Portugal, we have the great pope, a veteran of veterans, still giving a great work after another every year. Has met the 101, but nobody can deny vitality of the ten films that has left us this last decade. I would stick with I go home, (2001), The Uncertainty Principle (2002) and Magic Mirror, (2005) including its small jewels like Belle Toujours (2006) , or the recent Singularities a blond girl (2009) , which is about to premiere in Spain.

Pedro Costa. And against the veteran de Oliveira at least one of the strongest confirmations of the decade in the international arena, his compatriot Pedro Costa, after its emergence in the 90 minority. Now a priest author of more personal film, he began the decade with the powerful portrait of slum Fontainhas in In Vanda's room (2000) , radicalizing the line started in the 90's Bones. Ended the trilogy with a major work, boundless and full of records: up Juventude (2006) . And we can not forget two small wonders: Where lies hiding your smile? (2001) and No change rien (2009) . The mixture of documentary and fiction, ethics and aesthetics, the legacy of the most classic and most bloody, the total absence of bias and absolute bravery. Has anyone defined best film in the future?

Albert Serra. The most radical, controversial and controversial English directors. Emblem of a new form of filmmaking, his works range from the sublime and the merely provocative. Despercibido happened with his film Crespi (2003) , now rescued, but emerged as an earthquake in the Cannes Film Festival where he went with his very particular adaptation of Quixote, Honor de Cavalleria (2006) , but a quality issue undeniable, and with a speech and very clear ideas. In the same line also followed with great The dells cannot ocells (2008).

Michael Haneke. Let some side during this decade by critics demanding, Haneke's films became popular and has won critical prestige "qualité". But despite everything, there is no denying the absolute influence of new forms of filmmaking and the great movies that has left the last 10 years, beyond any controversy, as the American version of Funny games (2007): Code Unknown (2000), The Piano (2001), The Time of the Wolf (2003), Caché (2005), The White Ribbon (2009)

Alexander Sokurov. go down in history much more than carry out the first film shot sequence in a single plane ( Russian Ark (2002) ), he has experimented with the image and the possibilities of digital, and has made history as a dialogue with anyone and keep alive the spirit of Tarkovsky. See one of his movies can be a sublime experience. Dolce ... (2000), Taurus (2001), Elegy for a Trip (2001), Father and Son (2004), Sun (2005), Alexandra (2007).

From U.S.

Clint Eastwood. started the decade hiding in the shadows of cult cinema, without attracting much attention, Space cowboys (2000) and Blood Work (2002) , but flared up in 2003 with Mystic River when many it took for dead, and the following year marked a milestone in the agreement between critics and audiences with Million Dollar Baby. Since the days of Ford audiences and critics had not been so close. Then he gave us his personal war with diptych Flags of Our Fathers (2006) and Letters from Iwo Jima (2006) and has fired its top academic Exchange (2008) with Gran Torino (2008 ) , great public but with discrepancies between critical and not yet released Invictus (2009) . Eastwood has made his most perfect film artifact twilight, and the need to shoot at full speed has not helped lower the quality.

Brian de Palma. One of the filmmakers who cause more divisions, representative of the new American cinema of the 70, little by little his figure is becoming increasingly personal and worship. Four films from the commercial ( Mission to Mars (2000) and speaks for itself and authentic, and among them, for me, a seminal work in contemporary cinema, Femme Fatale (2002) , without forgetting the Iraqi risky experiment of Redacted (2007) film pastiche or misunderstood by most Critics, The Black Dahlia (2006) .

David Lynch. But in terms of influence and risk in the American cinema can not but mention David Lynch. Never a very personal work, dangerous, dark, and so impeccable style has been so popular as draft Mulholland Drive (2001) , which has gained over the years a legion of followers. But forgetting popular resonance, as probably no film INLAND EMPIRE (2006) film marks the future. Taking his principles and ideas as far as possible, and with all the freedom that gives digital cinema, Lynch immerses us in an unprecedented adventure, an experience like 3 hours in a movie theater. The first film that dares to follow the paths opened by Bergman in person 40 years earlier. Levitation and catharsis. Obviously, most publicly turned his back.

Michael Mann. But in terms of digital cinema, few directors have experimented with it as Michael Mann, which despite its irregularity has taken a handful of good films with important findings: Ali (2001), Collateral (2004), Miami ( 2006), Public Enemies (2009).

Gus van Sant. definitely seemed lost for the cinema and was forgotten by the critical mass when it premiered in 2000's film Finding Forrester . However, since there seemed to be invaded by the spirits of Bela Tarr, Chantal Akerman and Alexander Sokurov and filmed in his trilogy of death one of the key works of the decade: Gerry (2002), Elephant (2003), Last Days (2005 ). Then he pushed the impressive Paranoid Park (2007) , a kind of perfect compendium of his radical style and his narrative style, ending the decade with a reasonably conventional and militant film: Milk (2008) . What roads will now follow his unpredictable career? That really is a great unknown. Quentin

Tarantino. tapping into the more commercial movies without losing personality Tarantino we find that after their uneven but interesting diptych Kill Bill (2003-2004) us his most daring film and, perhaps, more personal, Death Proof (2007) . Then finished with a nearly perfect work, his vision of history and film or film history, which for him is, in Inglourious Basterds (2009) .

MN Shyamalan. With a legion of fans but, in the same way, not a few critics, a purely commercial filmmaker who plays at being author: Unbreakable (2000), Signs (2002), Woods (2004), Lady in the Water (2006), The Incident (2008) .

Christopher Nolan. Nolan began making films minority, but since the decade began strongly, with its interesting foray into the black cinema Memento (2000) . Followed with a great genre film, Insomnia (2002) and ended at the top of the industry leading Batman to the screen and reaching the highest levels of industrial efficiency Batman Begins (2005) and Knight Dark (2008) that, at least, are cinematically debatable. Among both gave and made the magic The Prestige (2006) .

Wes Anderson. Another cult author, in this case in the field of absurdist comedy. There is no denying that his personality is more accentuated with each movie and has a very interesting personal world. Many people have great hope in him, although we think it still has not finished set. Still, his movies are endearing, funny, despite its rarity reflect the traumas of modern society flawlessly, as seen in The Royal Tenenbaums (2001), The Life Aquatic (2004) or The Darjeeling Limited (2007 .)

Paul Thomas Anderson. The great Hope of American cinema dismissed the previous decade as an apotheosis. In this, however, only had time to make two films, one of which, in my opinion, is the best comedy of recent times, Punch-Drunk Love (2002) , and the other Be Blood ( 2007) , without ceasing to be a great movie, it does seem a bit flawed, and his claim for total and absolute work histrionics and excessive ambitions.

Sofia Coppola. Surely his peculiar personal situation within the film industry, combined with special sensitivity and its various influences cinéphiles, made of Sofia Coppola one of the most important filmmakers of modern cinema. After its debut last year of the previous decade with The Virgin Suicides, in 2003, established themselves with Lost in Translation, a masterpiece that will win over time and presents all the folds and nuances of our new globalized world loud noise. His influence and character of worship is growing, and little of the Coppola finally jumped into the pool in 2006 with the bold and magnificent Maria Antonieta, this other, more controversial than the last.

Kelly Reichardt. After some early noise and virtually unknown 90 years, American author has exploded in this decade with two sisters movies, small, radical, sincere and extremely beautiful and tender: Old Joy (2006) and Wendy and Lucy (2008) . Contemporary American independent cinema passes through it.

Judd Apatow. Speaking of comedy is now talk of Judd Apatow, responsible for the resurgence of this kind in the United States. And not just the films directed by him, but all that emerged from the factory: 40 Year Old Virgin (2005), Knocked Up (2007), Superbad (2007), Forgetting Sarah Marshall (2008), Adventureland (2009 ) ... Shows that an idea and honesty to it can fill some gaps and limitations, its supporters and detractors, of course, they battle for a while.

From Asia

Kiyoshi Kurosawa. The author has shown that Japanese horror movies can be deep and have existential concerns. Able to play all genres and very prolific, this filmmaker already enshrined in the 90 to Cure, seems capable of doing good type of movie. In this decade, his most famous films are the fundamental Kairo (2001), Retribution (2006) and Tokyo Sonata (2008) .

Nobuhiro Suwa. For many the most important Japanese director, and certainly, who has gone better reflect the intimate concerns of middle-class families. Experimenting, gathering influences very specific and very well treated, and their limits extremely refined style, contemporary vacuum filmed as anyone and has been known to progress from his masterpiece of 1999 and major film in contemporary cinema, M / Other. This decade has given us H Story (2001), A Perfect Couple (2005) and Yuki and Nina (2009) , his first commercial release in Spain, while the film more moderate and accessible of his films.

Naomi Kawase. Representative with Suwa, Japanese cinema that intimate search of bodies and spaces, Kawase's films live in herself and the viewer, are fused with life and get a wonderful effect, which need not be between documentary and fiction. Apart from its fantastic documentary highlights Hotaru (2000) , his masterpiece Shara (2003), The Mourning Forest (2007) and Nanayo (2008) .

Takashi Miike. The most violent, treacherous, savage wheel filmmaker on the planet wakes up as many accessions as contempt of the public. Bastísima a work that only in this decade is nearly 50 titles, at least must say that leaves no one indifferent. Visitor Q, Gozu, Izo, Zebraman, Juvenile A Bing Bang ... The list is overwhelming

Hong Sang Soo. more afrancesado East director, which reflects the heritage of the Nouvelle Vague (Rohmer fundamental in his work), but also of classical Japanese cinema of Yasujiro Ozu, this decade has created an exciting work by its folds and the ability to withdraw on itself, growing and mutating and still be herself. The most perfect example of that depth and the light can go hand in hand, perhaps we are witnessing the most authentic and uncompromising filmmaker from the East, with films ranging from the very good and perfect. Virgin Stripped Bare by her Bachelors (2000), Turning Gate (2002), Woman is the Future of Man (2004), Tale of Cinema (2005), Woman on the Beach (2006), Night and Day (2008), Like You Know It All (2009).

Tsai Ming Liang. After his dazzling appearance on the 90, it seems that in recent years his star off slightly, but remains a major filmmaker in the new movie. He began the decade with a sublime work, What time is it? (2001) , and continued to spread his speech to the limit with his most radical film, Goodbye, Dragon Inn (2003) . Gained popularity with the debate The Wayward Cloud (2005) , and filmed in 2006 a magnificent film that served to reunite with all the symbols and fetishes of his peculiar world, not want to sleep alone. We'll see what happens after the last fiasco in Cannes with his French adventure Visage (2009) . But we can not forget that one as he reflected in recent years emptiness, loneliness and aesthetic reflection on the past and present. Between Truffaut and Antonioni.

Hou Hsiao Hsien . The creator of the Taiwanese new wave, orphaned after the death of Edward Yang. Little to say about this teacher, authentic classic film that is renewed with each film. His seniority has made him reflect the modern world of young people as no one in his influential Millennium Mambo (2001) , joined past and present, Japan and Taiwan, Café Lumiere (2004) , and assaulted by various filmmakers, made compilation of his career in Three Times (2005) and dared the French adventure in E l red balloon (2007) , emerging victorious, as always happens with him. A safe value.

Wong Kar-Wai. eminence and has gone from pope cinephilia author despised and devalued in recent times. But only for his film of 2000 deserves to be here, because Mood for Love was the culmination of his style perfected over years, and has marked a before and after in the world of cinema. Their imprint is present, not always for the better, in too many movies, and we must recognize that the germ of all, this little movie camera, whispered in a low voice, was almost perfect. After it became mannerist style, and although no longer a visual enjoyed, sometimes it is too tiresome. But surely recover the best Wong Kar-Wai, because there are many great things in their little impostada 2046 (2004) and My Blueberry Nights (2007).

Jia Zhang Ke . Representative of the new generation of Chinese filmmakers, Zhang Yimou has been overcome, Jia Zhang Ke poses in his films all the challenges of the new cinephilia. Venturing between documentary and fiction, making the authenticity and beauty events consistent, dialogue with his characters and situations, his movies are wonderful. In addition to the turmoil that erupted between the critical mass in Spain with his Golden Lion in Venice Still Life (2006) . Other movies: Plaform (2000), Unknown Pleasures (2002), The World (2004), 24 city (2008) . Nobody is like him and societal changes the new way of looking at art and life.

Wang Bing. also fundamental to the new Chinese cinema has been mostodónticas this documentary film, heartbreaking and life almost unbearable. West of the tracks (2003) and is a milestone, a classic, this monument was followed I Fengming (2007) and Crude Oil (2008). Apichatpong

Weerashetakul. But in recent years the growth has come from Southeast Asia and, above all, its over Martian experimental director. Always innovating, always going beyond what was thought, this Thai surprises with each creation, with its ability abstraction, with its sense of humor, his ability to break the mold ... Came up with the decade and still on top. Mysterious Object at Noon (2000), Blissfully Yours (2002), Tropical Malady (2004), Syndromes and a Century (2006).

Raya Martin. The latest addition and more radical, this time from the Philippine cinema. To some, his films are the work of a precocious genius with a knack for compelling cinema. For others it is a joke. Certainly not indifferent, since its debut in 2005 at age 20. A short Film about the National Indian (2006), Autohystoria (2007), Now Showing (2008), Independence (2009) ...

From elsewhere ... Canada and Argentina

Guy Maddin. With a long career behind him, it seems that finally, in recent years, despite not having any film released in theaters, the Canadian began to be known in our country. With his personal style, almost always in black and white, with its retro but totally avant-garde, its seductive power is beyond doubt. Dracula: Pages from a Virgin's Diary (2002), kneel Cowards (2003), The Saddest Music in the World (2004), Brand Upon the Brain (2006), My Winnipeg (2007).

David Cronenberg. Another Canadian veteran, but this one opens in theaters. Though his style seems to have become more manageable in recent years, themes, obsessions and character are still present from first to last minute of all his films. This decade has seen a change for Cronenberg, who has slipped from the science fiction film to the film noir, as demonstrated in A History of Violence (2005) and Eastern Promises (2007) , without forgetting that film transition is not always fairly valued, is perhaps his most personal and captivating psychological drama Spider (2002) .

Lisandro Alonso. In Argentina we have received some of the more radical proposals, like all works of Lisandro Alonso, situated on this new trend that makes time and space fundamental character of his creations, always looking for an abstraction inherited from Bresson and Dreyer. Freedom (2001), The Dead (2004), Ghost (2006), Liverpool (2008).

Lucrecia Martel. Less ascetic Alonso but in a similar vein, the film reaches into the bowels of the viewer and stir through his style, steeped in authenticity. His creations are a blow to all of our conventions. The Swamp (2001), The Holy Girl, (2004) The Headless Woman (2008).

Others. Because for some reason or other have left many in the pipeline, for example, randomly: José Luis Guerin, Alain Resnais, the Coens, Nicholas Klotz, Miguel Gomes, Johnny To, David Fincher, Gondry, Ang Lee, Malick, Linklater, Woody Allen, Scorsese, Kore-eda, Bong Joon Ho, Kim Ki-Duk, Almodóvar, Straub / Huillet, Bellocchio, Brisseau, Miyazaki, Akerman, Llinas, Bruno Dumont, Eugene Green, Kaurismaki ...

Edward Yang: diving in Taiwan throughout the world

Article originally published in the journal Shangri-La , in the monograph for the filmmaker Edward Yang, where it appears proper formatting and layout. The magazine can be downloaded directly from here .

can not imagine a more appropriate production year for the last film by Edward Yang. Yi Yi , in 2000, marking an end of the century, millennium, and will set a key for a society that is aware of its present and its historical moment. Yang's work is fundamental to the history of cinema, but I would say that it is much more to the history of society, both reflecting and absorbing it, describing and narrating an account of individual consciousness world perfectly combines the emotional with the intellectual.

In this sense, some of Yang's films are committed to the intellectual as emotional reveal, while others prefer to opt for a pure emotion, which covers a thick layer of thoughts and ideas on existence, loneliness and forms of relationships between people in the twenty-first century. Yang's film joins two centuries being able to combine the influences of film with the influences of life, watching films with the observation of reality, love and hatred for everything around him, and the contradictions inherent that enrich all individuality.

Edward Yang's films are deeply attached to his long and very localized in their homeland, despite their influences foreignizers and having spent periods of his life in America. These characteristics make his work into something completely personal, too, and here is the most reflective of his legacy, does not lose sight of the temporal and spatial relationships, influences that spring from the certainty that nothing exists without it everything conditions, preceding it or around it. This will mean historicist A brighter summer day (1991), fundamental film embodies the rest of his work, or Western influences in all his films, made explicitly expressed, beyond film features in the penultimate frame of their creation, Mahjong (1996).

As Jaime Pena said in his introduction to Edward Yang [i] , there are various classifications and groupings of Yang's films about forms, styles and characteristics. And that is something that stands out in a career of only seven feature films and they seem to be defined quite themselves.

One of these classifications, John Anderson, "Yang brings cinema into two blocks, the" Urban Trilogy "would constitute That Day, On The Beach (1983), Taipei Story (1985) and The Terrorizer (1986), and the black comedy depicting the cynicism of the rich society of the nineties Taipei, A Confucian Confusion (1994) and Mahjong . Outside any documentation would be his two major works A Brighter Summer Day and Yi Yi, two films that, for Anderson, emparentarían by themes and structures. For its part, Emilie Yueh-yu Yeh and Darrell William Davis would structure it with the group of modernist melodrama eighties, which would take its contribution to In Our Time and its first three films, and its three postmodern comedies a decade later, the black and A Confucian Confusion cynical and Mahjong, followed by lighter and humanist Yi Yi. Again would be decoupled A Brighter Summer Day , perhaps his most ambitious film, probably the most successful film of Yang and perhaps also of all contemporary cinema. "

Yang is usually reminds one of the founders of the Taiwanese New Wave, who modernized his country's cinema following the legacy, twenty years later, his colleagues in the "Nouvelle Vague" French. But just as happened with the French 60, in Taiwan every filmmaker has made his own way, within the artistic independence and adequacy, and Yang has been free, thus, all kinds of clichés or generational characteristics, This does not imply that they can not establish guidelines and criteria more or less general interpretation and decoding of their world. First of all, his work in general it is deeply personal and unrelated to any kind of fashion, and hence that some critics might feel misplaced due to certain changes experienced in his films.

urban trilogy, following the footsteps of Antonioni

The first three films of Edward Yang make up its so-called "urban trilogy" , and define a number of issues and concerns that are central to the Taiwanese filmmaker's career. From these films we see a director with his time deeply rooted and society, making an indissoluble union between background, form and context, which will be the most brilliant achievement of these films. Just as Ford, Ozu and Antonioni, the collective sense, the social scaffolding chained to a particular time, will mark deeply the feelings and ramblings of the protagonists. If Ford Ozu and unites them a nostalgic look to the past and disenchanted present (expressed in Ozu in this, at Ford in the past), Antonioni, and Yang, prefer digging in the knife hidden evils of contemporary society, and how these are manifested quietly in private relations. Even if we speak of references can not forget to Werner Herzog, Aguirre whose film about a filmmaker turned Yang, or Mikio Naruse, probably the closest filmmaker who most need and Edward Yang.

This referred to the contemporary commitment does not mean that already in this first trilogy, Yang is not interested in the true meaning of time, memory and recall, key issues (not to compose the substrate content, but the point of view) of his first film, That Day, On the Beach (1983). Yang shape to the film through flashbacks used to tell us the degradation and the hell that is becoming, little by little a relationship, preponderating and the role of memory and without being condescending to the sweetening that causes the memory. Yet he is aware that we are shown a recall, and recall all tends to go toward some end, like a sphere on top of a hill which unbalances a light puff of wind. With an obvious aesthetic concerns, perhaps too obvious in a film so visceral, in which both matter what is said, That Day, On the Beach fragments of reality shows absolutely natural, that demonstrates the need derives from autobiographical a film novice. Is discovered, the socio-political upheaval a Taiwan that the U.S. wants to look too quickly, and this causes obvious conflict with traditional values \u200b\u200bof submission and sacrifice. Yang, who rebels against the outdated moral values \u200b\u200bof society and against the modern conceit of savage capitalism, want to say that this is a wrong way, and that the explosion is about to arrive. But ultimately, That Day, On the Beach (evocative and from the title) is a great movie, however, suffers in the final part of a novice filmmaker impurity in too obvious a desire to demonstrate that you're telling is important, that transcends a simple love story over the years. So somehow squeaks sermon brother, explaining the ideas of the film, or the coda in off that seeks to emphasize the desire lyrical and evocative of the film.

's next film, Taipei Story (1985), is led by Hou Hsiao Hsien, and, interestingly, is the Yang film that comes closest in intent and style, the work of fellow, the other spearhead of the "Taiwanese New Wave." With an almost nonexistent narrative, which brings it even closer to Antonioni, and an elliptical style that recalls Bresson moments, Taipei Story shows even more strongly in his previous film disintegration of society through the disintegration of a marriage. Surely, of the three is the most demanding film with the audience (hence the box office failure at the time), lack of narrative handles or identification with the characters, making it more appealing in the coolness with which delves into the deepest feelings. Intrahistorias objects and characters that have reached their own metalinguistic category, and reframing indoors through doors or different furniture make us feel the isolation and confinement Yang who always joins the new conditions of life in the city, through the contrast between the intimacy of the apartments and flats in urban outdoors.

Finally, The Terrorizer (1986) presents a series of stories crossed years before Robert Altman revitalize this narrative structure. Halfway between the thriller and the intimate drama, Yang opened his camera to the most problematic neighborhoods, marginal characters who flirt with crime, not forgetting, of course, middle-class families in which the desire for professional success just coexistence with the staff.

offscreen narration and eloquent inserts in the middle of the scenes are reminiscent of Bresson, especially in his last work, Money (L'Argent, 1983), who also played to transcend genres, in addition, the presence of photographs that are essential to trigger the plot forces us to rethink Antonioni, Blow-up (1966) and thus, the possibilities of film metacinematográficas. And for the first time in the work of Yang (not last), chance is crucial in the movie, which seems essential in a film that tries to reflect the connections between different lives in a modern city (not far off the Magnolia (1999) by Paul Thomas Anderson). Similarly, none of the previous two films was possible to identify the viewer with some of the characters, in this case, the writer composes a very positive character, which can be easily understood by the viewer, and also gives some keys of the film, like the ironic stubbornness to separate fact from fiction when one and the other are the same ... Not every creator is obligated to deny this relationship? The Terrorizer takes it easy, but with an inherent tension always present, and only seems to falter in a violent stretch that looks like a sort of epilogue to the three films, and save giving a final twist consistent with all his previous work.

Views today, the three films may seem too rooted in the 80's, both in the atmosphere of the city as the characters and the moral crossroads raised, however, formally get that localism and try to universalize and global issues through a deeply scarred context and, therefore, profoundly real. Edward Yang achieved many significant achievements in these three great films (plus a great influence on current filmmakers, and can think, for example, Nobuhiro Suwa even more than in Tsai Ming Liang), all Sumptuous bill, which makes us think how it was possible that an author of this caliber to remain many years in the shadows, unknown beyond the lists of Jonathan Rosenbaum and Miguel Marías.

A Brighter Summer Day: Are you lonesome tonight?

it seems the big question being asked Yang about adolescence, A Brighter Summer Day , which has the smell of the most personal of his movies while away on all temporarily (also, in part, stylistically) of the other works of career. The institution A Brighter Summer Day is too large to make comparisons, either with their own work of director or other cultures. However, while Yang is the most classic film in its narrative and relationships between characters, it ceases to function as postmodern artifact in the way it handles the reference, identity and myth. It is no coincidence the omnipresence of a figure like Elvis, or teenagers who may remember James Dean in a movie that plays with the myths to define themselves. For let us not forget that the pretext for the illustration of a print generation of this magnitude is the memory of an actual event, a teen murder which rose in Taiwan, by the uniqueness of the event, to the category of myth. And myths are nourished by their very nature, engulf each other, as did James Dean or Elvis in this movie with them. Nor should we forget the explicit references to war and peace , the boundless Tolstoy novel, much more than a statement of intent.

After a series of films in which Yang's eyes focused on middle-aged characters, often young married couple (although a teenage star in his short film In Our Time , and another was quite important The Terrorizer ), now teenagers are the protagonists, with adults being part of the Taiwanese landscape, a way of defining the context that both affects the lives of the characters, real life. What we are shown in A Brighter Summer Day sentimental chronicles a turning point in Taiwan's history (major concern of all "Taiwanese New Wave"), and then determines how the lives of those who, In turn, less important socially. The struggle of youth gangs, the U.S. film and music, the educational problem posed by new ideas, the importance of family ...

Yang is always fundamental to the family, and seems to say that the lack of cohesion, poor communication between its members, means that young people look elsewhere to claw grips and allow them to forge their own identity: in this If religion, fashion, gambling, or pandilleo youth (played by each of the brothers of the title family.)

As all the characters common to a weakness that is manifested in the deep night film, women are always shown those most righteous, brain, and emotionally strong, the violence that children released is nothing but an expression of their insecurity and fears. So Yang never condemns, or even attempt to judge, but seeks to understand his fellow man (even if this sounds like a cliché), in some cases becoming more oblivious to the romantic visions dubious characters. And the great "tour de force" of the film, set in the humanistic purpose (we could say that social) understanding is, despite being a coral ribbon in the conscious identification of the viewer with the protagonist, who takes full effect at the end.

was mentioned briefly the night calling the film decisive for the creation of the climate and atmosphere that make up the landscape and spirit, making Yang a director of the race of Ozu and Ford (here more than ever by the epic nature of his narrative and play with the story through myths). What we can say is that A Brighter Summer Day has some of the brighter night scenes and evocative that you remember, and the night shows like that moment in which everything happens as if the days are over that weak links between the periods of darkness. The contrasts of lights are like those repressed passions that can only be released when the environment, immersed in darkness, vanish, and only the human being, individual, facing himself, ready to mourn, slash or temper the mood in a lyrical ride back home. After the storm, happy, sad for what should never happen, but covered by the shadow of protection.

Also relevant is the iconic force of some objects, which reinforces the emotional burden of the film, making myths out of nowhere, the daily existence of the invisible importance of sentences in a low voice. A radio, a flashlight, a photo, a katana, a vanished dream of being a star ...

Among Rebel Without a Cause and War and Peace lie the two forces that form the backbone of A Brighter Summer Day , in one case by force of daring modern romantic teenager, and another by the narrative compulsion, by the sincere and thoroughly laudable intention of drawing a prodigious tableau of characters in the context, his world, is completely recognizable and decisive end to end.

Yang passes to comedy

After the monumental A Brighter Summer Day , Edward Yang took time rest in which was devoted to theatrical activities, soon after returning to his favorite medium morphed into a comedy director. We must not be misleading, because this fickleness of lightness only going to last two films, to return later with Yi Yi the intimate drama in which so well moving. For this reason it may consider A Confucian Confusion (1994) and Mahjong (1996) cousins. Are the two plays by Edward Yang, in which, however, is still playing with gender and showing how thoroughly the concerns that run through the rest of his work. The association is restricted, therefore, the tone of lightness, breaking all previous and a coral structure orchestrated around a much faster rate than usual, sometimes even frantic. Yang proved to be a completely versatile director without losing any of authorship, because it gets great results with this leaflet to find another way to approach contemporary problems of Taiwanese society.

A Confucian Confusion meant a break with the intimate tone of his first trilogy Europeanized as Tolstoy's ambition A Brighter Summer Day . It seems that now the look is closer to the screwball comedy American than any other genre. Many of the themes of this subgenre (as locally and attached to a particular historical moment) are present in A Confucius Confusion and framed view is particularly striking in a society so different from American. As opposed to all the features of classical oriental character, dominated by the submission, the spirit of sacrifice, peace and calm, we see here some hysterical characters, slaves to their ambitions, eager for competition, in which the spirit of Zen has been minimized almost to disappear. If Confucius returned to Taiwan today ...

The film is light, but he never hides his load deep allegorical and undergoes meticulous dissection to close some of the most pressing problems of a country that has not been able to flash some changes too fast to be assimilated by the people. Neuroses of the characters do believe, at times, Edward Yang has now become the best Woody Allen, who was able to talk about the great issues of his time with a lightness that made him win only reach. In addition, it remains Edward Yang, continues to compose these frames that are much more eloquent than pages of dialogue; intimate search is not never judge his creatures, still investigating the integration of feelings in the urban landscape, still rolling the exciting night scenes, and still think their country out loud.

Mahjong is a film that might try to be more serious than before, and touches of comedy are dosed more carefully. Since this is not a screwball comedy , but rather to a reformulation of the codes that combine humor with the police or action genres. With some similarities to The Terrorizer , but much less serious Mahjong is consistent with his Westernized style (in line with Confucius Confusion A) by trying to provide an external view on Taiwan, played by some European characters mingle with the locals turning his surprise at it again a weapon of vitality and freshness (especially the girl, Martha, played by Virginie Ledoyen).

Yang This comedy hides a bold social criticism, mixing and putting the same level as the big businessmen and capitalists of the island and vulgar criminals. All seek their own benefit, but the latter is still hope to track down some last vestiges of humanity. True, the character of the French girl is a pure stereotype, completely idealized, but no more so than the eastern side represent archetypes turned inside out. Yang used the cartoon to try to reveal the truth that lies beneath the mountains of money, those that can not see the forest.

Finally, A Confucian Confusion Mahjong and two great comedies that may surprise framed in the work of its director, but that brings hope in the possibilities of a genre that increasingly looks plus a residue of the past or raw materials operating in series. Moreover, pose a great gateway to the great masterpiece that concludes the career of Edward Yang: that movie compendium of themes, ideas, obsessions and aesthetic inclinations which is the vast and incomprehensible Yi Yi.

Yi Yi: Will and close

But Yi Yi is much more than a will, a compendium of ideas or a fresh global intimate concerns family of the late twentieth and early twenty-first. Expertise in the direction of Yang, having shot films different type and changing course several times in his career, is beyond doubt, and attains a degree of subtlety that gets you closer than ever to the classic cinema of Ozu, while being aware of the importance of Western influence in both his work as a whole Taiwanese society. But the attitude has changed. Now is not to criticize, satirize, probing the wounds or show dead ends of existential problems, but accept reality and try to modulate it so that the world can become a livable and even sometimes suitable for happiness. To do this, empathy appears to be key, according to Yang, and the desire to want to understand our fellows and fellowship with them. Yi Yi is the film more lively and light-Yang, because the effort is to dismantle the truths and lies of every one to try to uncover the causes of the ills of society. It seems that teaching tactics to the viewer has invested, and instead of attacking the wrong ways, here we attempt to show the possibilities open. The important thing is now to understand, so the characters in the film are treated with so much understanding (even indulgence on occasion), reaching out to all types of audience and trusting in the goodness and the virtues of their souls. Yang seems to favor taking the defects and problems of the existing social organization at all levels (political, economic, family ...) to live as best as possible, both overall and in those small moments of happiness that are the most trivial occasions. The revolution in urban trilogy or the cynicism of his plays seem to have given way in Yi Yi, a gentle wisdom that it is not intended to impose itself as truth. Only one of the truths, one of the many truths observed from different points of view, the central idea of \u200b\u200bthis ensemble film in which every character has an essential role. This perspectivism is a key contemporary cinema (where the Korean Hong Sang Soo fundamental about the name) that it is aware that a single glance can not provide the wealth of a changing world.

Given this perspectivism, is decisive in Yi Yi father figure, NJ, who is articulate about the other characters like pieces of a puzzle. NJ is forced to take in every moment the different points of view mentioned above to understand everything that surrounds it, seems to say Yang, is the only way to move forward without falling into the deep well of the disaster. Besides the father, perhaps the most important at the conceptual level is the youngest son (about eight years), dedicated taking pictures of people's neck to show what they can not see. That philosophy sums up much of what he intends to do with the film director, to show the audience those little slices of life that seem insignificant but then are fundamental, unnoticed among the opaque walls that separate people from the big cities.

Over three hours of Yi Yi, perplexed assist the development of the piece of family life at a time when everything starts to crumble. One marriage, two children, a grandmother, an uncle recently married, and a host of daily adventures treated a subtlety and an impressive talent. The action moves with almost no notice, through ellipsis and off-screen, without any underlining, rocking the audience as a soft lullaby, inviting him to think without ever stand the boredom, noting the universality of conflict that are removed within each citizen.

In one scene from the movie, the father returns home and finds his wife collapsed emotionally, crying in the middle of an existential crisis. Yang fits the absolute understanding that display the two characters off while listening to a discussion that takes place off-screen, in the neighbors' house. The contradictions of the modern world, the paradoxes of the great city, the vagaries of the story townhouses. Many scenes from the film such travel, opening a huge branch of meanings and concepts suggested.

You can see Yi Yi as a mature and updated version of some of the structures and themes already present in The Terrorizer , perhaps with less European influence (Antonioni still present, but further ) and closer to some constants of Oriental cinema classic and last American film. In this sense, the aforementioned Magnolia , Paul Thomas Anderson, filmed just a year ago, is a film very close to Yi Yi, with differences of nerve, arrogance and wisdom imposed by differences in age and professional career between the two filmmakers.

filmmaker Olivier Assayas, friend and colleague of Yang, highlighted a fundamental point of the film in Article [ii] he wrote for the occasion Positif Taiwan's death:

"Yi Yi unveiled the wonderfully fertile Edward contradictions of film making that striking union in which, for the first time a movie completely devoid of the exotic China, fully grounded in the universal humanity, for better and worse, amounted to a Western audience that his characters are recognized in , an audience excited and confused background to be seen there. "

The film is overwhelming in its complexity and its ambitions, so it is best to let each viewer draw their own conclusions a viewing as rich as the one proposed by Edward Yang. Yi Yi meant, finally, a more global appreciation of the work of its creator. It won the prize for best director at Cannes, and numerous publications was highlighted as the best film of the year. Still continues to appear in a bold decisive in the lists that highlight the best films of the decade, and the misfortune is that Yang himself was unable to endorse it with a new creation. As Jaime Pena said in the book of Nosferatu, Edward Yang "was an 'outsider', an outsider who always wary of Taiwan, perhaps the same way he always distrusted his country and his city, Taipei, in who portrayed harshly and irony in many of his films. " The director, in a way that belies in his films, always seemed to feel out the world, both in Taiwan and abroad, and the haven of peace that peered in Yi Yi was just the perfect epilogue to a prolific career short but very exciting.

Edward Yang passed away on June 29, 2007, at age 59, after seven years of inactivity to fight against cancer, and apparently always felt quite alone professionally, lost in a world that just understand it. His films do not triumphed in the audience or between commercial cinema fans, but critics also preferred bolder note to filmmakers Taiwanese apparently cutting edge as Hou Hsiao Hsien and Tsai Ming Liang. Surely, this middle ground, hidden in the shadows, Yang placed in a privileged place from which to deploy their world view in their films without having to satisfy some or others, simply being aware of his own evolution as a person and as a filmmaker.

The spectators always be the memories evoked by their images and ideas detached from their creations. We can never forget those magical night rides a father with his son, nor those exterior facades of buildings that reveal the interior facades of its inhabitants. Do not forget the wet streets, empty apartments, memories of the beach, the whispering of the dream recollections and knots that do not conform to slide into the stomach. Are You Lonesome Tonight? Edward Yang, so tragic, so lyrical.

Edward Yang in Shangri-La

As happens every three months, and we are fortunate to enjoy the latest issue of the journal Shangri-La, which on this occasion, among other things, he devotes his monograph the figure of the late Taiwanese director Edward Yang, who could enjoy a little more than a year of fantastic full-scale retrospective at the Cine Doré de Madrid. For my part, I work with a modest generic text that reviews the full stroke of Yang. Within days

put my text here, but at the moment and you can download the full version from the website of Shangri-La:
